The Best Natural DIY Lotion
If I had to name just one DIY project that I couldn’t live with out, it would be my body butter, sometimes refererred to as lotion, HANDS DOWN!
Before I found this recipe, I was a body lotion junkie. Lotions from the mall, lotions from the grocery store, lotions from the health food store. If there was a “hot” lotion on the market, I owned it! The problem with that is that I never used them up. I would use about half, until I found a “better” lotion, then continue to grow my collection of half used lotions in my bathroom. It was an addiction, and it needed to stop!
Once I began my essential oil journey, I decided to start eliminating toxins from my home, hoping to achieve better overall health for me and my family. When I found out how much junk was in conventional lotions, I knew they had to go. So, I tossed everything out, and began my mission to make my own.
I found tons of recipes, and tried them all. Some I liked, some I didn’t. The recipe you’ll find below is a combination of many different attempts, and with trial and error, I came up with the perfect recipe!
I hope it’s perfect for you too!
Ingredients:
1 3/4 cup shea butter Unrefined is best, but refined will eliminate natural aroma
1/2 cup coconut oil Unrefined is best, but refined will eliminate natural aroma
1/4 cup carrier oil of your choice grapeseed oil, olive oil, fractionated coconut oil, etc.
2 tsp. vitamin E oil optional
30 drops essential oils optional, but definitely recommended
Instructions:
1. Measure out the shea butter and coconut oil, and melt over low heat in a crock pot or double boiler until all lumps are gone. Pour melted oils into a mixing bowl and let cool for about 10 minutes. Then add your carrier oil and optional vitamin E.
2. Cover your mixing bowl with plastic wrap and place into the refrigerator for as long as it needs to reach a cream cheese consistency. Covering it will evenly distribute the temperature and allow for a more even cooling process and you definitely want this to get the best "whip, nae nae!" (Did I just say that?)
3. After the correct consistency is achieved, remove the mixing bowl and whip with a mixer until a soft, fluffy texture is achieved. If you are not getting soft and fluffy texture, it's not cool enough. Place back into the refrigerator and repeat the mixing process.
4. Add desired essential oils while mixing. I typically use 20 drops of lavender, 15 drops of frankincense, and 10 drops of melaleuca to achieve better overall skin health, and combat any skin irritations that may arise for the family.
5. Spoon into desired jar, and smooth over skin when needed.
When adding essential oils, please make sure that you are using oils that are safe for topical application. If you would like more information on the essential oils that I use, click here!
